Devon IT, Inc., a leading thin client hardware and software provider, today announced that its Intel® Atom™ processor-based TC5 thin client is now qualified under the ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 program requirements for computers.

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy that helps businesses and consumers save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. The program started in 1992 and helped Americans save enough energy in 2008 to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 29 million cars — all while saving $19 billion on their utility bills.

“One of the major benefits of advanced thin clients like the TC5 is the reduction of power consumption that both helps the environment and reduces total cost of ownership for hosted client computing models,” says Stephane Verdy, CTO for Devon IT. “The TC5 can power users’ desktops using far less electricity than traditional desktop PCs while still delivering high-end computing experience. We are proud that the TC5 has been certified by ENERGY STAR, as our goals to reduce power consumption in corporations nationwide are aligned.”

Devon IT’s CTO, Stephane Verdy, routinely offers technical demonstrations and webinars for the media, and is available to comment on all topics relating to thin clients, alternative desktop solutions, desktop and server virtualization, and cloud computing. More information about the company’s hardware and software solutions are available at www.devonit.com.

Dual-DVI Just One of Many Capabilities Offered by New Generation of Thin Clients from Devon IT

The Intel® Atom™ processor is powering a new generation of thin clients from Devon IT that delivers both the management and security efficiency of a centralized, server-based computing model as well as the performance needed to run many of today’s more advanced software applications, including some web-based, graphics-rich programs.

Devon IT recently launched the Intel Atom processor-based TC5 – a stateless, fanless thin client for customers needing improved performance in a small, energy-efficient footprint. It’s one of the first thin clients capable of supporting dual- independent displays and ushers in the next generation of server-based computing. Intel and Devon collaborated on a ground-breaking case study that articulates the benefits of the Atom processor on a thin client. Download the case study here: http://www.devonit.com/resources/casestudyform.php?id=5.

“The Intel Atom processor-based TC5 thin clients deliver performance that rivals recent generations of the desktop PC in a stateless device that occupies a small footprint,” explains Stephane Verdy, Chief Technology Officer at Devon IT. “And because the Devon IT TC5 has no fan and consumes less electricity than traditional desktop PCs, the overall total cost of ownership is significantly less. The Devon IT TC5 thin client terminals are ideal for businesses with older desktops looking for lower TCO through server-hosted environments as well as for businesses looking for more robust performance from their existing thin client infrastructure.”

The case study highlights how today’s software requires resources not typically found in thin clients; why the ultra-efficient Atom processor provides the optimal platform for thin computing with today’s rich media applications; how Devon achieved Dual DVI, a first in thin client computing; and why the TC5 is the best choice for these types of applications.

“Intel Atom processor-based thin clients deliver the kind of performance that opens up server-based computing to the healthcare, education and financial services industries – groups that tend to run more demanding applications on the client,” added Verdy.

The TC5 thin client is available for product reviews upon request and is orderable from IBM. More information is available at http://www.devonit.com/products/products_TC5.php

New standard set in thin client computing as TC5 rivals desktop PCs in performance – orderable through IBM

Devon IT, Inc., today announced the availability of the TC5 thin client built with the Intel® Atom™ Processor. The TC5 is the world’s first and only thin client with the ability to support dual independent high definition digital displays and render videos on the web or remotely. View the Intel Case Study (http://www.devonit.com/resources/casestudyform.php?id=5) which discusses how this Atom-based thin client terminal offers rich performance and decreased costs.

“The TC5, operating with Intel’s powerful, newly-designed processor, sets the thin client computing industry standard with high-performance Internet and application capabilities that rival the user experiences delivered by traditional desktop PCs,” says Joe Makoid, president of Devon IT. “Devon IT’s goals have always been anchored in driving innovation to develop high-performance products that use less energy and reduce IT costs across-the-board. We are excited to work with our industry partners, including Citrix, IBM and VMware, to deliver the enterprise-wide benefits of the TC5 to customers needing high-performance, low-cost IT solutions.”

“We’re seeing widespread interest in the Intel Atom processor for the thin client platform segment, signaling high demand from a variety of industries,” says Joe Jensen, General Manager of the Embedded Computing Division of the Intel Embedded and Communications Group. “It’s a cost-effective solution to delivery of improved performance and energy efficiency in an enclosed, fanless system.”

“The TC5 with the Intel Atom processor and its integrated GPU is capable of handling a high level of display updates, in the tens of megapixels per second,” explains Stephane Verdy, Chief Technology Officer of Devon IT. “Coupled with the latest high-quality remote access protocols such as Citrix ICA with HDX, VMware MMR or Red Hat SPICE, the TC5 provides an excellent experience for demanding users who require multi-monitor support, high-definition video and use high throughput devices such as VOIP headsets.”

Partner Reviews
“The advanced features in the TC5 thin client will allow our customers to take full advantage of the new HDX Technology in Citrix XenDesktop. With HDX, Citrix provides the only virtual desktop solution that can deliver a high-definition experience, allowing end users to have the same experience with virtual desktops that they have come to expect from a traditional PC when using graphically-intense programs or multimedia applications over any network,” said Sumit Dhawan, vice president, product marketing, Desktop Delivery Group at Citrix. “Citrix and Devon IT continue to work together as part of the Citrix Desktop Appliance partner program to ensure that XenDesktop and Devon IT thin clients provide an ideal solution for today’s demanding desktop environments. We have been successful with Devon IT for many years and look forward to working with them to implement the TC5.”

“VMware has worked with Devon IT as a VMware Thin Client Certification Program partner to help our customers realize the full benefits of a complete solution leveraging our virtual desktop technology,” said Jerry Chen, senior director of desktop virtualization, VMware. “Our customers want rich, personalized virtual desktops that are available 24/7 from different locations and devices, and the TC5 together with VMware View helps us expand their options.”

Customer Reviews
After comparisons with other leading thin client brands, XN Corporation bought the TC5 because of its advanced features and cost. “The TC5 is an ideal client to connect to remote virtual desktops hosted on a cloud,” explained XN Corporation CEO Ian St. Clair. “We were looking for a powerful desktop device to provide in-room entertainment and internet access for our hotel clients. The TC5 provides very rich graphic in a thin client making it a very powerful and cost-effective alternative to traditional desktop PCs.”
