Devon IT just announced our latest release of our enterprise class thin client management software. Echo 4™ is a unique and powerful software product, developed exclusively by Devon IT that combines thin client management capabilities with connection control features. Echo 4™ joins all of the features and function of previous versions, along with user interface and scalability enhancements required by the world’s largest VDI deployments.

Some of the very best features of Echo™ have come from our specific interactions with our customers and with our partner Dell. With this latest release of Echo™ we have combined the feature, function, and scalability requirements for VDI implementations ranging from 100 desktops to global implementations in the hundreds of thousands.

All VDI and thin client devices that run DeTOS or Devon IT’s WES operating systems can be managed by Devon IT’s Echo™ thin client management software. This includes our TC2 and TC5, the Dell FX130 and FX170 OptiPlex thin clients as well as PCs repurposed with VDI Blaster™.

Devon IT Announces Thin Client Support for Microsoft® Office 365
Cloud-based Microsoft® Office 365 now fully supported by Devon IT thin clients, delivering even more virtual desktop power to organizations and home offices.

King of Prussia, PA – June 29, 2011 – Devon IT, Inc., a leading provider of thin client hardware, software, and virtual desktop solutions, today announced full support for Microsoft® Office 365, the latest addition to the software giant’s growing cloud application suite.

According to Microsoft’s website, Office 365 is a service that offers customers the chance to pay a monthly fee to use its familiar Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications online, as well as server software including its Exchange Online email program, SharePoint collaboration software, and Lync Online communications technology. The service will be hosted by Microsoft and telecom partners. Thin client portals accessing Office 365 application can be configured within an organization or home office for easy access to these leading applications hosted in the cloud.

“Microsoft Office 365 is a clear endorsement of an alternative desktop approach, and we’re witnessing very strong interest,” says Joe Makoid, President, Devon IT. “Many of our VDI customers are taking advantage of cloud computing where applications are no longer directly tied to a user’s desktop. Growing adoption will prompt more customers to migrate content from multiple locations to the cloud. Microsoft Office 365 gives organization a way to continue to use the standard applications while taking full advantage of VDI and cloud computing.”

Devon IT’s thin client solutions provide a fully-tested Office 365 plug-and-play solution and Devon IT thin clients running Windows® Embedded Standard 7 (WES7) are fully compliant with all Office 365 applications. Devon IT thin clients running its proprietary Linux-based Devon Terminal Operating System (DeTOS), as well as PCs repurposed with Devon IT’s VDI Blaster™ software, can immediately take advantage of the Office 365 service. Future releases of DeTOS and VDI Blaster will include enhancements that will enable Office 365 support out of the box.

“Our thin clients with WES 7 work perfectly with Office 365,” explained Ian Geiser, CTO for Devon IT. “WES 7 is an ideal Office 365 cloud endpoint for small businesses who do not wish to purchase a desktop PC, server, and support hardware needed for a small office.”

“We supported Office 365 beta customers for months and are excited to offer full support for the commercial release,” noted Makoid. “Devon IT is proud to be a part of the Office 365 community, and is committed to providing robust thin client solutions that will help users realize the cost and process benefits of Office 365.”

Virtualization has been a hot topic in IT over the past few years, and much of the discussion is around server vs. desktop virtualization and how it all works together.

We just finished passing around a book written by Michael Fox in 2010 called DeMystifying the Virtual Desktop: Starting with Desktop virtualization. It was fantastic. Fox raises a number of interesting points, and one in particular really hit home with us.

Right off the bat Fox discusses how important the end user at an organization is when it comes to deciding to switch to virtual desktops – and how sometimes they are forgotten in the grand scheme of strategic IT infrastructure planning. While CEOs and CIOs think about the bottom line, the users – who are both people and employees – ultimately determine how successful the organization will be based on their productivity.

In thinking about “end users,” many current solutions involve desktop PCs or laptops with generic applications, perhaps some cloud/SaaS applications such as Salesforce, and some common settings. These solutions are developed with the idea that many users are the same. Virtual desktops can mimic these basic setups, often at a fraction of the total cost.

In thinking about end users as “people,” Fox stresses that we should take the time to think about how individual users – no matter their job role – have differences: Different screen resolutions, different hours sometimes, different color variations on monitors. Maybe some people would want to work from home, but cannot due to financial constraints of setup and deployment. Virtual desktops could make working from home very easy and inexpensive, but also allow the flexibility to change 1,000 users’ settings or just one person’s settings very quickly and from the same one place.

In thinking about end users as “employees,” Fox notes that employees have standards – and that they need to be taken into consideration. Organizations should ask their employees what applications are fast or slow. What software would they like to use? What IT brands would they use at home? The wrong virtual desktop deployment could erase years of training and familiarity that could produce unhappy, inefficient works producing less on a day-to-day basis.

We like Fox’s ideas around thinking about the user first when it comes to considering virtual desktop deployments. With all the tremendous cost, security, and manageability benefits of desktop virtualization, it’s no wonder why some many companies are making the switch from desktop PCs. At the end of the day keeping the user in mind – and their preferences – is key.

Citrix, Microsoft and VMware have made VDI a clear priority and customers can expect continued advancements in remoting protocols and useability across the network.

Last week’s Citrix Synergy and Partner Summit was full of exciting announcements. Clearly the best of the bunch was Dell’s announcement of new VDI solutions based on Devon IT solutions . Citrix also announced the acquisition of Kaviza and their groundbreaking “VDI In-a-Box” product. (Devon IT announced a technology partnership with Kaviza as well.)

This, and other industry news from Microsoft, VMware and others means that VDI is fast becoming the preferred approach to corporate desktops. We have be touting the benefits of hosted and virtual desktops for years, (security, lower TCO, manageability, flexibility etc.,) but there have been perceived drawbacks from certain end users and customers. Today, however, the drawbacks are gone and the benefits clearly outweigh and lingering prejudgements. Thin client endpoint devics are more powerful that ever (see the Dell FX170) have a robust selection of operating systems (such as DeTOS or Windows Embedded) are easily and effectively managed (such as Devon IT Echo) and come with full support from the leading desktop companies (Dell and others).

In addition, Citrix, Microsoft and VMware have made VDI a clear priority and customers can expect continued advancements in remoting protocols and useability across the network. Finally, the transition to VDI now includes the ability to repurpose PCs with products such as our VDI Blaster.

For anyone looking at VDI solutions for any size company or organization, the time has never been better.
